In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)
Who is eligible to apply for IHSS? Any individuals that has Medi-Cal, is a California resident, lives at home or a residence of their choosing, and is 65+, blind, or disabled.
What is the purpose of IHSS? Provide an opportunity for the above individuals to age in their homes instead of being institutionalized in nursing facilities, assisted living , or long-term facilities.
What types of services does IHSS offer? It provides various assistance such as personal care (bathing, dressing, etc), domestic tasks (house work, meal prep, etc), paramedical services (wound care, etc), and protective supervision (accompaniment to medical appointments). It also offers individuals to supervise and hire their own caregivers (family members or from third company agency).
How does IHSS work? First, submit a Health Care Certification form. Then a county social worker will interview at your home to assess your eligibility and need for IHSS. After the assessment, you will receive an approval or rejection letter. If approved, you may hire someone to provide the approved services, whether it is a family member or a caregiver from a third party agency.
How do you receive payments? Hourly rate is determined by your county social worker. The State will issue you a check for every provider the individual hires.
