What is sick leave? Time off work when you are sick.
Will you be paid? Yes, this is a California mandated benefit that is provided by your employer. Starting January 2024, California requires that ALL employers must offer 5 days or 40 hours of paid sick leave with job protection per year.
How do I earn more sick leave? You must work at least 30 days . You get 5 days or 40 hours of paid sick leave per year.
Will my sick leave expire? Yes, if you don’t use your sick leave, it will not roll over to the next year.
Do I need to tell my employer the reason I’m using my sick leave? No, you do not necessarily have to disclose the reason you are requesting to use your sick leave. However, some employers may require documentation like a doctor’s note as proof for your sick leave. Every employment has different policies, so make sure to review your company policy if you are unsure.
Can I use sick leave whenever I want? Yes, however just like above, your employer may require certain documentations. Check with your company policy to confirm. This will help you plan out your schedule. Check out the videos below for further information.
