Paid Time Off (PTO)

What is PTO?: Time off work that you can use however you like.

Will you be paid?: Yes, this is a benefit often provided directly by your employer. Most employment offers PTO, but some do not. If you are unsure, review your employee handbook or ask your human resource department. If you don’t have a human resource department, ask your manager. This is also a good question to ask if you are interviewing for a new job.

How do I earn more PTO?: Depends on what your employer offers. Some employment offers unlimited PTO while others offer 8 hours per pay period.

Will my PTO expire?: No. California prohibits “use-it-or lose it policy” with PTO. Some employers offer a pay out options if you have unused PTO by the end of the year, while others may require that you use all PTO within the year. If you are unsure, find out so you can plan your schedule and appointments accordingly.

Do I need to tell my employer the reason I’m using my PTO?: No, you do not have to disclose the reason you are requesting to use your PTO. That is your personal information. Some may ask, but you are not obligated to give them a reason.

Can I use PTO whenever I want?: No, most employer would require that you submit a PTO request to get paid time off. Submitting a request to use your PTO does not guarantee that you will get those days off. Depending on your employment and management, your PTO may be denied due to staffing issues. If there is a day that you must take off, submit the request early.
