Paid Family Leave

What is paid family leave?
Time off from work so you can care for a new child or a seriously ill family member. It designed to help you balance work and family responsibilities without losing your source of income.

Will you be paid?
Yes, you will receive a portion of your regular pay during your leave, typically, around 70-90% of your regular pay.

How do I earn paid family leave?
You would be eligible to apply for paid family leave if you earn at least $300 in your SDI in the last 5-18 months. Complete the application at least 41 days before the date of your family leave.

How much time do I have for paid family leave?
Up to 8 weeks. You can break the time apart or use it all at once.

Do I need to tell my employer the reason I’m using my paid family leave?
Yes, you need to apply through California Employment Development Department (EDD). Your employer will receive the application to complete his/her portion of the application.

Can I use paid family leave whenever I want?
Yes, paid family leave is designed for you to take time off to bond with a child, take care of a serious ill family member, or support a military spouse.
